Chromatin: A sticky silence
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent findings indicate that heterochromatin serves as a molecular sink for factors involved in chromatin-mediated repression of gene expression; long-range interactions that position a euchromatic gene near a heterochromatin domain influence its susceptibility to transcriptional silencing.

9 Abstract 10 Detailed information on web geometry and the material properties of the various silks 11 used elucidates the function of the web’s different structures. In this study we investigated the 12 non-sticky spiral in Nephila edulis webs, which in this species is not removed during web13 building. This permanent non-sticky spiral shows several modifications compared to other, 14 i.e. tem...

An H1 to relax chromatin? R ed blood cell differentiation requires a stickier histone H1, which closes chromatin to transcription, based on fi ndings from Dhananjay Yellajoshyula and David Brown (University of Mississippi, Jackson, MS). The less sticky form, however, might favor transcription not by falling off faster but by relaxing chromatin. Undifferentiated cells need relaxed, accessible ch...
متن کاملChromodomain-mediated oligomerization of HP1 suggests a nucleosome-bridging mechanism for heterochromatin assembly.
HP1 proteins are central to the assembly and spread of heterochromatin containing histone H3K9 methylation. The chromodomain (CD) of HP1 proteins specifically recognizes the methyl mark on H3 peptides, but the same extent of specificity is not observed within chromatin. The chromoshadow domain of HP1 proteins promotes homodimerization, but this alone cannot explain heterochromatin spread. Using...
متن کاملNew light on sticky sisters
a multisubunit protein complex conserved from yeast to humans, plays a major role in sister chromatid cohesion. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, cohesins bind to chromatin before or during DNA replication and remain bound until the metaphase–anaphase transition. In vertebrate cells, however, most cohesins dissociate from chromatin in early mitosis, long before the onset of anaphase. This is clearly...
متن کاملNoncoding RNA localisation mechanisms in chromatin regulation
An important challenge in biology has been to understand how cell-type-specific expression programs are orchestrated through regulated access to chromatin. Knowledge of the interaction between noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) and chromatin regulators has the potential to help answer such questions, but how ncRNAs target chromatin regulators to specific sites in the genome is not well understood. Recentl...
